Overview and Instructions

The purpose of this app is to show the withdrawal data reported to DEQ by facilities across Virginia. This data (reported monthly in millions of gallons) is summarized in a table in the "Withdrawal Data" tab. The "Watershed Map" tab shows a map of HUC12 (Hydrologic Unit Code) watersheds throughout the state, allowing a user to select one and see what facilities withdrawal from that area. Where does the data come from? Withdrawal data is reported to DEQ by individual facilities throughout the state. Under the Virginia Water Withdrawal Reporting Regulation (9VAC25-200) , users withdrawing groundwater or surface water in Virginia are required to report annual water withdrawals if withdrawals exceed 10,000 gallons per day for any purpose (roughly 300,000 gallons per month), or 1 million gallons per month for crop irrigation purposes. Data is current through the most recent reporting year (2024) and is updated annually once the next year of data has been processed. More information about the reporting process can be found here on the DEQ Water Withdrawal Reporting Page

How the app works:

Withdrawal Data

This tab shows a table of water withdrawals across Virginia. By default, it shows all the data available, including Groundwater and Surface Water, Permitted and non-permitted. There are options to limit the table at the top, such as by locality or watershed. All filters are set to include "All". hen you have selected the criteria you wish to filter by, make sure “All” is deselected in order to correctly display the information. Limiting the "Year of Withdrawal Date" will reduce the number of columns in the table. Changing "Group By Month/Year will change the columns from total withdrawals in a year to withdrawal by month. You can also use the "Search" field in the upper right corner of the table to search all columns at once. The "Excel" and "CSV" buttons will download the table (applying all filters currently set) as the specified format. The 'Source Type' filter works a bit differently than the others. This will change the report to only show either surface water or groundwater withdrawn by the facilities. Since the same facility can withdraw both surface and groundwater, this is not a field in the table. However, the 'GW Frac' (groundwater fraction) field represents the portion of that facility's use that comes from groundwater (calculated based on most recent reporting). A GW Frac of 1 means the facility only uses groundwater, while a GW frac of 0 means they only use surface water. Setting the Source Type filter will show the facility total use of only ground/surface water. By default, both are selected. Custom Filter The "Custom Filter" Checkbox allows users to filter by any field in the table. Checking it creates 3 boxes. The "Select Field" option determines what column it will filter by. Any column in the table will show up here. The "Select Filtering Method" indicates how the filter will be applied. Lastly, the "Enter Value" is the value the previous two boxes will filter from.

Watershed Map

This tab shows a map of all HUC12 watersheds across Virginia. It may take a minute to load the first time the tab is opened. The "Zoom to Watershed" box allows a user to search for a specific HUC12, and will zoom the map in on that watershed and highlight it red. When a user clicks on a shape on the map, it will show a popup with the HUC12 code as a clickable link. Clicking it will take the user back to the "Withdrawal Data" tab and filter it to the selected watershed. What is a HUC12 watershed? HUC stands for Hydrologic Unit Code. This is a nationwide code that diffrentiates watersheds and drainage areas, similair to a zip code for addresses. The number after HUC" refers to the number of digits in the code. The more digits, the smaller the watershed. These change in intervals of two, with HUC2 referring to the largest watershed, and HUC12 referring to the smallest.

If this is the first time you opened the map, it may take a minute to load. During this loading this page will appear blank. Select a watershed and click the link to see what facilities are in it.

Location information is aggregated by HUC12 watershed to comply with section § 2.2-3705.2 of the Code of Virginia which prohibits DEQ from sharing precise location information, such as coordinates, for public water supplies
